Career Compass - Profile

Learn how to view and edit your skills, career interests, and experience within Career Compass.

Career Compass uses machine learning and AI to curate your experience based on data points within your profile. What you'll see is based on the data Career Compass gets from your human resources information system (HRIS), combined with publicly available info from sources such as LinkedIn, GitHub, and more.

Note: Each company has unique configurations. This article covers the capabilities within Career Compass regardless of whether your organization is using them or not.

To access your profile, log in to Career Compass and click Profile at the top of the page.

Edit Profile Picture

Click the pencil icon ✏️ below your current profile photo and select Change photo. Choose your photo, crop it if necessary, then click Apply in the top right-hand corner of the pop-up.

Edit LinkedIn URL

Click the pencil icon ✏️ in the top right-hand corner of your profile. Enter in your LinkedIn URL. Save in the top right-hand corner of the pop-up. A change to your LinkedIn URL may take up to an hour to be reflected in your profile data.

Experience

In the Experience tab, you will see your work experience at your current company, prior work experience, and additional insight, such as certifications and education. The information available to you is based on the data we've received from your HRIS and public data.

You get to choose who can see your profile information, namely your experience at your current company, other experience, and education. The two options are to show those values to “Everyone at your company” or “Only your manager”.

Editing Experience

  • Experience at your current company

    • Use the pencil icon in the right-hand corner to add detail or context to your current role and prior roles at this company.

  • Other Experience, Education, and Certifications

    • Within these sections, you can add to or edit the information you see. Click the pencil icon in the right-hand corner of a section, then click the plus icon ➕ to add a new entry or click the pencil icon ✏️ next to an entry to open the edit pop-up.

When you're done editing or viewing information within a pop-up, click Save to save your changes or click Cancel to discard any changes and close the pop-up.

Tip: Sections that can't be edited will have an info icon. When you hover over it, it will let you know that it was imported from your HRIS, and you can’t delete it.

Skills

There are several sections of skills within your profile. Clicking on a skill anywhere in Career Compass will open a slide out with additional details such as description, related skills, recommended learning, and roles that use this skill. From anywhere in Career Compass, you can add skills to your profile as ones you have or ones you want.

Recommended Skills

Career Compass automatically recommends skills for you to add based on your job architecture and the target roles you’ve added to Career Interests.

  • Click I have it on a recommended skill to add it to your Skills I have section.

  • Click I want it to add a recommended skill to your Skills I want section.

Skills I Have

If you have enabled public data, Career Compass will automatically populate your Skills I have section based on public data. From this foundation, you can add more skills.

  • Click I have it on a recommended skill to add it to your skills.

  • Alternatively, you can type the name of a skill in the Add skills text box. Career Compass will suggest skills to you as you type. Click on a skill to add it to your profile.

  • Remove a skill from this section by clicking the pencil icon, then clicking the X next to the skill name. Click Done when you're finished making changes.

  • Some data on your profile cannot be changed or removed. Hover your mouse over the info icon to understand where the data is coming from and why it can’t be removed.

Skills I Want

Skills I want will help Career Compass recommend the best learning opportunities for you

  • Career Compass will automatically recommend skills at the top of the Skills tab based on your company job architecture and the target roles you’ve added to Career Interests. Click I want it to add a recommended skill.

  • Alternatively, you can type the name of a skill in the Add skills text box. Career Compass will suggest skills to you as you type. Click on a skill to add it to your profile.

  • Remove a skill from this section by clicking the pencil icon, then clicking the X next to the skill name. Click Done when you're finished making changes.

Power Skills & Key Competencies

Some organizations have Power Skills next, others use competencies. The functionality is the same. Click the pencil icon next to the section to open the editing pop-up. To see the description of a power skill or competency, hover over the info icon.

Check the box next to a skill to add it to your profile. Optionally, you can add examples of how you have demonstrated the skill by opening up the down arrow to enter in a description of how you have exemplified that skill or competency. That additional context will appear on your profile.

When you're done editing, click Save to save your changes or click Cancel to discard any changes and close the pop-up.

Tip: Sections that can't be edited will have an info icon. When you hover over it, it will let you know that it was imported from your HRIS, and you can’t delete it. You can still make changes to your profile from within your HRIS. The next time your HRIS syncs with Career Compass, the changes there will be reflected on your profile in Career Compass.

Career Interests

Access your Career Interests page by selecting the Career Interests tab on your profile page. Here you'll find additional data points to fill out, such as your preference on remote work, willingness to travel for work, interest in moving to a management position, and more.

Career Interests are shared with your manager to assist them in guiding the next steps in your career. Entering your career interests will also help Career Compass recommend jobs, projects, learning opportunities, and contacts that best fit you.

Editing your Career Interests

Career Interests are categorized into several sections. Enter in your preference and select Save. Modify your response by clicking the Edit button in the lower right-hand corner of the section.

  • Your Next Step

    • This will tailor the type of job opportunities Career Compass recommends to you based on the type of career move you're looking for.

      • Improve in current role will likely be similar in position, responsibility level, and pay rate to your current job.

      • Advance to the next level will likely be a higher position in your organization with more responsibilities and greater pay.

      • Move to a new role would likely be something totally new.

    • Check the option you are interested in.

    • Click Save to save your changes or click Cancel to discard any changes.

  • Roles

    • This will tailor the type of job opportunities and learning recommended to you based on the job's title.

    • Type the name of a job title into the Add Job Titles textbox. As you type, Career Compass will automatically suggest titles within your organization. Click a title from the suggestions list to add it to your interests. Remove a title from your interests by clicking the X next to the job title.

    • Click Save to save your changes or click Cancel to discard any changes.

  • Goals

    • Goals provide an opportunity to write out specific development goals for yourself. Goals are visible to your manager so they can help guide your development and career path.

    • Write a specific goal in the Goal # textbox. Click Add another goal to add additional goals to your profile.

    • Click Save to save your changes or click Cancel to discard any changes.

  • On-site / Remote Work

    • This will tailor the type of job opportunities Career Compass recommends to you based on whether you prefer on-site, hybrid, or remote positions.

    • Check the box next to the option you're interested in. One or more options can be selected.

    • Click Save to save your changes or click Cancel to discard any changes.

  • Location

    • This will tailor the type of job opportunities Career Compass recommends to you based on the cities you're willing to live and work in.

    • Select Yes or No if you're interested in working in a different location. You can specify if you're willing to move in the short term (less than two years) or long term (between two and five years). If you select Yes for short term or long term, enter the names of the locations you're interested in. One or more locations can be entered.

    • Click Save to save your changes or click Cancel to discard any changes.

  • Travel

    • This will tailor the type of job opportunities Career Compass recommends to you based on your willingness to travel.

    • Select Yes or No if you're interested in traveling for work. If you select Yes, enter a number in the % box corresponding to the percentage of time per week you're interested in traveling.

    • Click Save to save your changes or click Cancel to discard any changes.

  • IC / Manager

    • This will tailor the type of job opportunities Career Compass recommends to you based on your interests in management roles or individual contributor roles.

    • Select whether you're interested in Individual contributor roles or Manager roles. One or more options can be selected.

    • Click Save to save your changes or click Cancel to discard any changes.

  • North Star

    • A North Star is a professional goal for where you would like to be in five years. Your North Star is visible to your manager so they can help guide your development and career path.

    • Write a specific career goal in the Career North Star textbox.

    • Click Save to save your changes or click Cancel to discard any changes.
